Capcom Get A Clue!

2009 June 16

capcomclassicI remember a time when Capcom turned out golden games left and right. Street Fighter 2, Final Fight, Onimusha, Darkstalkers, Mega Man, Devil May Cry and so on. However, In the last few years Capcom has been in a rut of sorts.  Their top talent has gone there own way and its been showing. Right now Capcom has nothing mind blowing this year or next. If the company can’t turn out the hits you will see it either combine with another company (SNK Playmore) or they will go the way of the DoDo.

Now I know what most of you will say, ” Street Fighter 4 was a big success, how can they be failing?” Well, could Sega survive with only Sonic the Hedgehog? Can Nintendo make a profit with only a single Mario game while the other first party titles fail? The easy answer is no, because that is not how business works. When a company has a hit game they want to make another before going back to the well on their first success.

Now I know what your thinking, ” K, they have lots of games coming next year, like Dead Rising 2, Monster Hunter 3 and Lost Planet 2.” Yeah can’t arge that, but these games were no where near as big of a sucess as Street Fighter 4 and lets face it Dead Rising and Lost Planet weren’t excatly the best games. As for Monster Hunter on a console the last time Capcom released it on a system it sold pretty poorly even though it was a great game.

In conclusion Capcom is going to hit some choppy seas in the next few years. The company needs to get some new blood with new ideas to bring the company back. A medicore sequel (Bionic Commando, Street Fighter 4) or retro  remixes (Bionic Command ReArmed, Mega Man 9) just isn’t going to cut the mustard anymore. What do you think?
